HAMILTON, Montana (August 26, 2024) – As the last long weekend of summer approaches, residents of Hamilton, Montana, are gearing up for Labor Day celebrations. Sapphire Community Health (SCH) urges everyone to take a moment to prioritize their health and safety while enjoying the festivities. With proper planning and a few mindful choices, you can make the most of the holiday while avoiding common pitfalls.,

“Labor Day is a time to relax and have fun with friends and family, but it’s also important to be aware of potential risks,” says Melanie Goodnight, APRN of Sapphire Community Health. “Whether it’s something as simple as staying hydrated during outdoor activities, making healthier food choices at barbecues, or ensuring that you don’t drink and drive, these precautions can help you enjoy a safe and healthy holiday.”

Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday of September, is a national holiday dedicated to honoring the contributions and achievements of American workers. The holiday traces its origins back to the labor movement of the late 19th century, a time when industrialization was at its peak and labor conditions were harsh. Workers often faced long hours, low pay, and unsafe working conditions, which led to the rise of labor unions advocating for better treatment.

The first Labor Day parade took place on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union. Thousands of workers marched in solidarity, calling for fair wages, shorter workdays, and improved working conditions. The event was such a success that it inspired similar celebrations across the country.

Stay Active to Enhance Well-Being

An extended holiday weekend is an excellent opportunity to stay active and make physical fitness a part of your celebrations. In Hamilton, you’re surrounded by the natural beauty of the Bitterroot Valley, offering countless ways to stay physically active. Whether you’re planning a hike in the nearby mountains, a jog through local parks, or simply a brisk walk around the neighborhood, keeping your body moving contributes to overall health. If group activities are more your style, organizing a friendly game of soccer, basketball, or frisbee with friends can add an extra layer of fun and help you stay fit.

Hydration is Key—Don’t Neglect It

Even though Montana’s late summer temperatures are typically milder than in many other parts of the country, staying hydrated is still essential, especially if you’re planning to spend time outdoors. Proper hydration helps your body maintain its normal functions and prevents fatigue, dizziness, and more serious conditions like heat exhaustion.

“The general recommendation is to drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water daily, but you may need more if you’re active or spending time in the sun, said Goodnight. “While water is the best option for staying hydrated, electrolyte-rich sports drinks can also be beneficial, particularly if you’re engaging in strenuous activities. Be mindful, though—avoid sugary drinks like soda or fruit juices, as they can actually contribute to dehydration rather than preventing it.”

Stick to Healthy Eating Habits Despite the Temptations

“Labor Day is often synonymous with barbecues, picnics, and indulgent meals, but it’s important not to let the holiday become an excuse to abandon your healthy eating habits. Instead of reaching for chips, cookies, or other processed snacks, consider healthier alternatives that are just as satisfying, noted Goodnight. “Fresh, crisp vegetables like carrots, celery, and bell peppers make for great snacks, and seasonal fruits like watermelon, peaches, and apples can serve as refreshing and nutritious dessert options. By making a conscious effort to choose healthier foods, you can enjoy your holiday meals without derailing your diet or feeling sluggish afterward.”

Enjoy Alcohol Responsibly

Holiday weekends often come with increased alcohol consumption, which can lead to dangerous situations if not managed responsibly. Whether you’re attending a family barbecue, a gathering with friends, or simply relaxing at home, it’s crucial to be mindful of your alcohol intake. Heavy drinking can not only impair your judgment but also lead to serious health issues, including liver damage and dehydration. If you do choose to drink, set limits for yourself and make sure to alternate alcoholic beverages with water. Additionally, always have a plan for getting home safely—whether it’s designating a driver, using a rideshare service, or arranging for a sober friend or family member to pick you up. Never drive under the influence, as doing so puts both your life and the lives of others at risk.

Safe Food Preparation

For many, Labor Day wouldn’t be complete without a barbecue or picnic. However, improper food handling can quickly turn a fun event into a health hazard. To avoid foodborne illnesses, it’s essential to handle and store food properly, especially when dealing with raw meats. “Keep raw meats refrigerated until they’re ready to be cooked, and make sure they’re cooked to the appropriate internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria, said Goodnight.

Additionally, be mindful of how long food is left out in the open, especially if you’re dining outdoors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises that food should not be left out for more than an hour when temperatures exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If the weather is cooler, the two-hour rule applies. Foods that require refrigeration should be kept in coolers with plenty of ice or ice packs to maintain a safe temperature of at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

No matter what your plans are for the Labor Day weekend, SCH encourages everyone to take these simple precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Please be aware that Sapphire Community Health will be closed on Monday, September 2, in observance of Labor Day. The clinic will resume normal operations on Tuesday, September 3. We encourage all patients to plan accordingly and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday, said Goodnight.
