Stay Safe and Enjoy the Ravalli County Fair
Published: August 1, 2024
HAMILTON, Montana (August 12, 2024) – The Ravalli County Fair is a much-anticipated annual event that brings together the community for fun, entertainment, and tradition. From thrilling rides and lively performances to delicious food and agricultural exhibits, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. However, with summer temperatures often reaching their peak during fair week, it’s important to prioritize safety and take steps to protect yourself and your family from the heat.
Sapphire Community Health, in Hamilton, is reminding all fairgoers to stay vigilant about their health while enjoying the festivities. The combination of excitement, physical activity, and exposure to the sun can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses if precautions aren’t taken.
“Everyone looks forward to the fair, but the summer sun can pose health risks if precautions aren’t taken,” says Johanna Dreiling, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Sapphire Community Health in Hamilton. “It’s important to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and listen to your body.”
Fair Safety Tips:
Stay Hydrated: Hydration is crucial, especially when spending extended periods outdoors. Make it a habit to drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration can sneak up on you, leading to symptoms like headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and refill it frequently at the water stations located throughout the fairgrounds. Remember, beverages like soda, coffee, and alcohol can actually contribute to dehydration, so limit their intake and focus on drinking water or electrolyte-rich sports drinks.
Beat the Heat: The fair is full of activities that can keep you on your feet for hours, from walking between attractions to standing in lines. To avoid overheating, take advantage of the shaded areas and indoor venues scattered around the fairgrounds. These spots offer a respite from the sun and a chance to cool down. Wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton can also help keep your body temperature down. Don’t forget your wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses—both are essential for protecting your face and eyes from the sun’s harsh rays.
Eat Regularly: Amidst the excitement of the fair, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and forget to eat. However, maintaining a steady intake of food is important to keep your energy levels up and prevent fatigue. While the fair offers an array of tempting treats, try to balance indulgent snacks with more substantial meals. Eating foods rich in protein and complex carbohydrates can provide sustained energy throughout the day. Don’t be afraid to take a break from the action to sit down and enjoy a meal—your body will thank you.
Sun Protection: Protecting your skin from the sun is vital, especially during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 before heading out, and remember to reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming. Sunscreen isn’t just for sunny days; UV rays can penetrate through clouds, so it’s important to wear it even if the sky is overcast. In addition to sunscreen, wearing protective clothing like long sleeves and pants can provide an extra layer of defense against sunburn. Choose dark, tightly woven fabrics for the best protection.
Listen to Your Body: Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, so it’s important to pay attention to how you’re feeling. If you start experiencing symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache, or excessive sweating, it’s crucial to take action immediately. Find a cool place to sit down, drink water, and rest until you feel better. Ignoring these warning signs can lead to more serious conditions like heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which require immediate medical attention.
“Enjoying the fair is a highlight of the summer, and with a little preparation, you can ensure that it’s safe and fun for everyone,” adds Dr. Dreiling. “Taking these simple steps can make a big difference in preventing discomfort and ensuring that you have a memorable experience.”
